York House Gardens, Twickenham. I don’t think that Mr. McCullin would like this one overly much :).

Poll: Have you sold any artwork online? and if so at what website?

Hi,

I thought this quick poll might be of interest to anyone trying to sell their artwork online. Anyone can view the results. I hope that it could prove useful. If you have sold work on more than one of se sites then you can select multiple options. If you have sold work on a site that isn’t listed in the options please use the Other option to give the name of the website.

Oh, and please share, the more the merrier.

ThanksΒ  and best wishes

Leigh

New work:”Lonely Vigil”

Very painterly work, a seagull on the river.

PS. I’m not sure about this one but, then again, the last work that I wasn’t sure about has currently gotten seven and a half thousand views on Flickr so what do I know about it! :).

My year on the Internet

Hi,

This year I’ve really tried extremely hard to establish some sort of presence on the Internet but have found it incredibly difficult. I thought I’d write a few words about my experiences.

At the beginning of the year I had only my Flickr page and this blog but I have tried to explore all avenues and branch out on social media and my website with very limited success.

Firstly the things that I’ve enjoyed, that have worked for me and why. Fellow WordPress bloggers and Flickr members remain my absolute favourites and I’ve really enjoyed the great sense of friendship and comradery that I’ve experienced in both communities, so nothing has changed there but I’ve also enjoyed joining about.me . I guess one could argue that about.me is a bit of a vanity site but I’ve enjoyedΒ  meeting new people there and there are manyΒ  professionals and intesting people from all walks of life including artists, photographers and other creatives. It is also a very easy way to interact that doesn’t demand a large amount of upkeep. Another site that I’ve recently joined is the art blog at Niume which is a great place to share one’s art and converse with fellow artists. They also kindly tweet my postings which helps to spread the word. Lastly there are my virtual galleries which are just fun to create and also free which is my favourite word at the moment :).

Now for the sites that haven’t worked for me. I guess that Facebook probably tops the list. I confess to not liking Facebook overly much and it just hasn’t clicked for me. I have “blogs” on Tumblr and Google+ but again these haven’t really worked well for me. Probably my most dissapointing venture is my websiteΒ  ,I’ve put a huge amount of effort into the site trying to keep it fresh and interesting but it gets very few visitors. Lastly there’s Twitter, this hasn’t worked at all for me, there’s so many millions of tweets all the time and the only things that seems to get many people’s attention contains sexual and/or political content.

In addition to the above I’ve also tried to sell my art through two online shops, ArtPal and Pixels.com but so far neither has been successful. I’ve tried discount codes and limited time promotions on Pixels.com but it is almost impossible to attract buyers with so much art on display or, and I have to recognise this possibility, my work simpy isn’t good enough to tempt people to put their hands in their pockets πŸ™‚ in which case it doesn’t matter where I try and display it.

So, as the year draws to a close and looking towards 2016 where should I go from here?. I think that I may well just revert back to my WordPress blog and Flickr, post on Niume and maintain my profile on about.me and call it a day at that. I’ll probably leave all my other sites as they are at least until any associated fees are due. I’d like to be able to afford to upgrade my Pixels.com account so that I could upload more work and not have to keep replacing works but I’m in two minds about this as it’s an extra expense that I can ill afford.

I’d love to hear from you if you are aware of other sites that I should be looking at and to share your experiences. I sometimes think that maybe I, should video our cat dressed up as Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer whistling “I’m dreaming of a white Christmas” whilst juggling and tap dancing, post it to YouTube, Twitter and Facebook and watch it go viral, it’d probably be easier! πŸ™‚

Best wishes,

Leigh

New work: “Slippery Rocks and Turbulent Waters”

Another work from my recent visit to the Weir at Teddington. The title could be the story of my year LOL πŸ™‚

New work: “Low Tide”

The River Thames at Twickenham.

22909176944_f184839b23_z

The River Thames at Twickenham at low tide. Funny how I so often arrive at the river and the tide’s out. :). A flock of geese had just swooped in low over the river and landed. I didn’t intend for this work to be black and white but I didn’t like it as a colour work.Β  I actually like the river when the tide is out as it gives some foreground interest and I like the textures in the mud.

New Virtual Gallery

Hi,

I thought I’d do a new virtual gallery as I haven’t done one for a while. They’re always fun to put together :).

A year in the life gallery

Best wishes

New experimental work: “Fade away and radiate”

I fancied something a bit different πŸ™‚

Toughing it out!

Hi,

I knew before I started that it was going to be incredibly tough and, in that respect, I haven’t been dissapointed, trying to get established and promote my artwork is by far the most difficult and challenging thing that I’ve ever done. There have been a great many times this year when I’ve come extremely close to calling it a day and admitting defeat but every time I think to myself “Come on Leigh!, you’re made of tougher stuff than that, you have to keep going!”.

At the end of the day I don’t have a choice. I’ve put myself in a situation where there are only two possible outcomes, succeed or crash and burn and failure is absolutely not an option at my time of life nor is going back to a mind-numbingly boring, repetative, non-creative, thankless, no-brainer of a job, I’d rather die trying to do something that I love than succeed in something that I detest and rejoining the ranks of the living dead.

I know what I am capable of, it’s a case of getting the chance to prove it to others. I’m not being immodest but I do have a faith in my creative abilities, I know that I can deliver if someone shows a little faith and trust in me.

So, I’m still toughing it out even though it gets tougher by the day. I won’t give up!, in the words of the song “You aint seen nothing yet, baby you just aint seen nothing yet!”.

Best wishes

Leigh
