The art of “Free” (or cheap)

Hi,

A few words today about my experiences trying to promote my work on the internet. I simply don’t have a lot of money to spend on promoting my work so I’ve managed so far to limit my expenditure to free or low-cost options such as domain names, affordable website hosting, free website plugins etc..

Sure I’d love to do other things but it can be a very expensive undertaking and I’ve had to compromise on a few desirables but one can do a lot without too much financial outlay. To date I’ve purchased three domain names, one for my website, one for my blog and another for my about.me profile page, web hosting package and a few other relatively minimal expenses.

It has been a steep learning curve and pretty labour-intensive but there’s so much out there that one can utilise such as free virtual galleries, online catalogue/flip books, mobile app builders, online shops, social media sites etc. and I’ve taken advantage of these services as much as possible. It is sometimes surprising just what one can accomplish through one’s own labours without it costing a small fortune.

Kind regards

Leigh

Another painterly textured work.

New Work: “21st Century Man”

One of those opportunistic shots, for a change I had the right lens fitted :). How things have changed, when I was young you couldn’t get a half-decent coffee virtually anywhere in this country and the mobile phone hadn’t yet been invented. πŸ™‚

New work: “Industrial Strength”

A new work based on an old family photograph of my late grandmother (left of centre) working in a factory circa 1920’s. Look at the age of the boys especiallyΒ  the boy in the bottom left.

She was an amazing woman, born just before the turn of the century in 1899, the first woman in the UK to hold a motorcycle driver’s license and she had a very hard working life and lived through two world wars but was always very cheerful a very “strong” and very kind woman. In the middle of the “Blitz” in 1940 her and her husband sold their house and moved back in to London so that she could nurse her sister who was very ill and she was a second mother to her sister’s children.

Later in life she battled spinal problems, cancer and a heart condition, any one of which is bad enough, but I never saw her let her health issues get her down.

A truly remarkable, caring and courageous woman.

Website re-design and limited time promotions.

Hi everyone,

I’ve just completed a sizable re-design of my website, I hope it looks a bit better now. I’ve also tried dipping my toe in the water as the saying goes and offering limited time promotions on two of my works, “The Dolls” and “Adoration of the swan”. I really don’t know if all the work is really worth it as I don’t think that too many people know of my website or my work but I’ll keep plugging away, you can’t blame a guy for trying :).

I considered if discounts and promotions “cheapened” my work and the simple answer is yes it does for the buyer but I figure that X% less of something is a lot better than 100% of nothing!. At the end of the day, something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.

New website blog

Hi everyone,

I have added a blog to my website so that I can publish more detailed information on my work and my website and post on my artwork and occasional musings to this blog and stop boring you with throw pillows :).

Thought I’d try something a bit different. Semi-autobiographical humourous work. πŸ™‚

New work: “The girl by the river”

A simple painterly work of a girl standing by the River Thames in Kingston.

Throw in the pillows

Hi folks,

I’m not throwing in the towel and I haven’t sold out πŸ™‚ however a selection of my work is now available on throw cushions/pillows, tote bags, mobile phone cases, duvet covers, shower curtains etc. on Pixels.com (Fine Art America), Oh, and they also sell framed and un-framed prints and canvases! ;).

Website and about.me updates

Hi folks,

I’ve updated my website quite a lot lately. Not a particularly popular venture as it seems that even Google have stopped visiting πŸ™‚ and I’ve also updated my about.me page. I just don’t have the monetary resources to try and promote my work any more than I currently do. If you do visit the website try out the slider on the left-most picture on the home page. I like the before/after view of one of my works from the original photo to the finished artwork.
