“This Strange Engine”

Inspired by one of my favourite songs of the same name

“Oh Mummy, Daddy, will you sit a while with me
Oh Mummy, Daddy, will you jog my memory
Tell me tall tales of Montego Bay
Table mountain, flying fish, banana spiders, pots of paint
And the sun on the equator
Setting like an ember thrown to deep water
From crimson to black
But coming back
Tomorrow
On the horizon”

Psssst!, want to easily tell which of your spare camera batteries is charged.

Hi,

Following my recent accessories postΒ Β in which I mentioned my purchase of these handy little plastic battery storage/transportation cases:

box

It got me thinking that it would be nice if there was an easy way to identify which of the batteries was charged and which need charging as they all look identical so I set out to see if I could find an easy solution and found these handy little self adhesive “things” or to give them their full name “orangeRX Battery Charge Marker – Essential Lipos indicators! – 5 Pack” (catchy name) πŸ™‚ to stick on the cases. Β£3.95 for a pack of 5 on ebay with free delivery. πŸ™‚

Come in no. 49, your time’s up!

Bottles on a seafront stall in Eastbourne. The title will probably be totally meaningless to anyone who never went on a boating lake as a kid πŸ™‚

Rationalising my social media pages

Hi everyone,

I’ve been thinking of doing this for some time. There are only three sites which I enjoy posting to and interacting on, my blog here and my pages on Flickr and NiumeΒ so I have decided to only post to these sites and no longer post to my Facebook, Twitter and Google+ accounts. I shall leave these pages as they are as I’ve invested some effort in setting them up and maintaining them but I shall not be updating them. I also intend not to renew my annual website and Pixels account subscriptions when they expire.

Hope everyone is keeping happy and well,

Best wishes

Rethinking my approach to HDR

Hi,

I started thinking about how many shots and at what +/-EV settings I’ve been using. I have been taking a total of 5 shots at +/-2 EV. I’ve found that the -4 and +4 EV shots often don’t contribute much if anything to the final result and so changed over to just a total of 3 shots at +/- 2 EV. I think that I’ll stick with this for the time being and see what the results are like. This has a number of advantages for me.

  • saves 2/5ths more space on the HD card per “scene”.
  • Increases battery life accordingly.
  • Long-term it decreases equipment wear and tear.
  • Reduces long-term backup file storage space requirements.
  • Reduces subject movement (ghosting) between shots, important for me as I mostly shoot hand-held.
  • Reduces risk of camera movement (ghosting) between shots for the same reasons as above.
  • Means that the most underexposed shot can be taken at a higher shutter speed reducing possible camera-shake, again good when hand-holding.

I’ll post more when I’ve continued experimenting.

Hand-held 3 shot HDR I took the other day.

For comparison purposes, A single image from my visit to Strawberry Hill House and then the three HDR image (perspective corrected and slightly cropped) . The vignetting caused by a filter used with my 12mm lens.

For anyone interested I’ve uploaded a full-sized image to my Flickr page which really shows the amazing resolving powers of the M.Zuiko 12-40mm lens. Shot taken at f5.6. https://www.flickr.com/photos/leighkemp/34968765335/in/dateposted-public/lightbox/
