PEN-F outdoor test shots.

Hi folks,

I decided to quickly pop down to a local park and get some test shots in the rain. It was hammering down by the time I got back home and I got drenched but my gear stayed dry. πŸ™‚ . All shots shot as 5-frame HDR, handheld as usual and using silent electronic shutter.

I’m too sexy for my camera!. :)

If your preference is for big heavy DSLR kit and lenses then you are probably reading the wrong post. πŸ™‚ If, one the other hand, you have an interest in small, lightweight, cameras and lenses then please read on…….

Hi folks,

Sadly, at my advanced age, I have to concede that the opposite is much nearer the truth, my camera is probably too sexy for me. πŸ™‚ . Rain, rain and more rain and the forecast for the next few days, yes, you guessed it, even more rain, you just gotta love the UK weather. So, frustratingly, after weeks of lockdown,Β  I haven’t been able to put my new camera through its paces yet except for setting it up to my preference and taking some indoor test shots.

I think I’m going to have a lot of fun with my new Olympus PEN-F which I bought “preloved” in near mint condition for a very good price. I’m really looking forward to testing it out and it has some very interesting features and, it IS a very sexy camera, especially in the silver finish and thus puts a huge tick in my “I like retro looks” box πŸ™‚ . It also fits hand-in-glove with my preference for lightweight kit, especially when combined with a few of my fast and lightweight M.Zuiko primes like my 12,17,25 and 45mm lenses and/or small compact zooms like my M.Zuiko 9-18Β  mm and Lumix 35-100 mm. I can carry this camera and three lenses, plus the obligatory spare batteries and memory cards and my M-CON macro converter, in one of my very compact Manfrotto bags.

Another small, but financially important, plus for me is that the camera uses the same BLN-1 batteries and thus my USB chargers as my OM-D cameras. Don’t be fooled by it’s retro styling though, this camera has a 20 MP sensor, a 50 MP JPEG/80 MP RAW hi-res shot mode, silent electronic shutter modes and just about every other feature that one could expect to find in a modern digital camera as well as Olympus’ great solid build quality. I really like the dedicated exposure compensation dial on the top as well as the highlight/shadow control wheel which puts these controls right where you want them and of course thatΒ  very interesting dial on the front.

Can’t wait to try it out properly a post some shots taken with it.

All things come to he who waits

Hi folks,

I’m very excited by my new camera, more news when I upload some shots taken with it. It’s a camera I’ve been hankering after for ages.

Venice Re-visited (Redux)

Hi folks,

A friend of mine suggested that I might re-visit some of my old works to help chase away my lockdown blues. This shot, taken in 2004 enlarged and re-edit using my much more modern software.

“Tempus fugit”, 120 frame timelapse. :)

Hi folks,

More experimentation today.

Okay, here’s something I don’t understand. I set it up to take a frame every minute up to a total of 120 frames (two hours in real time). So you’d think that the second hand would always be in the same place in every frame but, as you can see, it moves!. Great that it does but I don’t understand how, oh well it won’t stop me sleeping tonight πŸ™‚Β .

Kind regards

Leigh

Experimentation

Hi and thanks to Sherry Felix,

I’ve been experimenting with some new ideas. First off I’ve been learning about electronic shutter. I never really gave it much thought but I shoot a lot of HDR and that typically mean 3-5 shutter activations per image so it got me thinking and I’ve programmed a setting (Myset) to enable exposure bracketing and, here’s the important bit, enable High Speed Silent Shutter (11 FPS) which uses electronic shutter rather than high speed mechanical shutter. That way I can shoot as many frames as I like and not wear out the mechanical shutter any more than it already is. It has it’s limitations if one shoots high ISO, very fast action and/or in indoor lighting but, in both my landscape and macro work it looks as if it’ll work well. And it has the added bonus of being silent.

The trick I normally use to decide if, when and how much bracketing to use is to keep an eye on the camera’s on-screen shadow and highlight display which shows shadow areas and blow out highlights and rotate the the manual exposure compensation dial either way to work out how many stops of over and under exposure are required to restore detail in the highlights and/or shadows, remembering to reset it before shooting.

The other thing I’ve been playing around with is using my 10 inch tablet for chroma key green (Hex #00ff00) and chroma key blue (Hex #0000ff)Β  and other “funky” backdrops.Β  A couple of quick test images:

Thanks Sherry, you’re helping me to stay sane. πŸ™‚

Best wishes,

Leigh

I’ll be back

Hi folks,

I’m taking an indefinite break from my photography. I don’t think that my work is going anywhere at the moment. The macro stuff has been fun but I’m much more interested in my landscape work, without transport and with everything still locked down it’s more than frustrating. Maybe when things change I’ll be able to get out again and do what I love doing but for the time being I’m going to put my photography and artwork on hold.

I'll be back

Kind regards

Leigh
