Micro Four Thirds, Landscapes and Depth of Field

Hi folks,

One thing that one doesn’t hear so much about is the increased depth of field that one gets with the micro four thirds system and how this benefits landscape photography. You hear quite a bit about how this effects portraiture where everyone seems to go bonkers about bokeh but, as you know, I’m not in the slightest bit into portraiture πŸ™‚ .

For landscape work (and macro work) this is a distinct advantage for me as I get the equivalent of twice the depth of field for a given aperture compared to a full frame camera fitted with a lens of the equivalent focal length. So if, for example, I’m shooting at f/5.6 with a 14mm lens then I’m getting a depth of field of a 28mm full frame lens stopped down to f/11.0, a difference of two very valuable stops, but I’m also getting a faster shutter speed permitting me to capture shots in lower light and negating the need to possibly have to increase ISO which is especially useful when combined with five stops of image-stabilisation for my handheld HDR shots, a real win-win-win situation. πŸ™‚

I usually stop down two or three stops, depending on the lens, to f/5.6 which is the sweet spot in sharpness for most of my lenses much more and one gets diffraction creeping in inducing softness which is the last thing that I want. If I want softness, and I quite frequently do, then I’ll do it in post.

Best wishes,

Leigh

“Bottom’s Up!”

Hi everyone,

Riverside landscape work of the Mitre at Hampton Court . Another shot with my PEN-F and much underused Sigma ART 60mm DN lens. A very sharp lens which I’m determined to try and use more. This lens along with my Lumix 12-32mm are two great sharp, compact lenses. The 60mm is discontinued but I guess that one could still pick one up used. I recommend both these lenses to Micro Four Thirds users.

“Standoff at the shoreline”

Hi folks,

Birds vs boats. River Thames, East Molesey. I thought I’d make one last trip to one of my all time favourite locations before we move to the South Coast. I took with me a few of my lesser used lenses. This shot taken on my PEN-F camera and M.Zuiko 9-18mm lens, a lens I like for its really wide angle. I’ll miss the river, it’s been a constant factor running through most of my life and always a source of inspiration and the subject of countless of my shots but, like the river, it’s time to move on.

#nopeople πŸ™‚

Hi everyone,

I was talking with a friend the other day and he mentioned that there aren’t many people in my shots. Whenever I add tags to my shots on the 500px website it always suggests “No People” and I find myself habitually selecting it, as, in 99.99% plus cases it’s applicable.

I wouldn’t go so far as to define myself as asocial or, if I am at all, then not on the hermit end of the scale and certainly not as antisocial, some of my best friends are people, πŸ™‚ but I don’t really want people in my shots unless it’s absolutely unavoidable and I actively try and avoid it and I take very few shots, excluding family shots, where the person is deliberately the subject of the shot. It’s just a personal preference that I want to try capture a landscape scene as naturally as possible singularly uncluttered with people.

Apart from the guy driving the tractor, and I couldn’t really have asked him to pull up, dismount and get out of the shot, and maybe a few distant people on the beach, I don’t think there are very many people in these shots, ducks yes, swans yes, seagulls yes, geese probably, even sheep! but no people. πŸ™‚
