Why the heck do I habitually carry these items around?

Hi everyone,

As I think that most of you know I like to carry an absolute minimal amount of photographic gear and I’ve been giving some thought to why I always pack some things with me. Now bare in mind that I’m not embarking on a month long trip up the Amazon River or suchlike and I’m always within, at the most, a few hours of civilisation, why do I, for example carry two or three spare batteries when one fully-charged spare would almost certainly do? as the only time that I can remember flattening three batteries in a day was some years ago in Rome. Likewise why do I carry several “spare” memory cards when one would surely suffice?. Then there’s other accessories like filters, sure I very occasionally use one but is it worth habitually carrying one or two when the 99.9% or more of my shots aren’t taken with one. Lastly there’s my lens shade for my LCD, it’s very useful in bright sunlight when travelling in hot countries, that’s why I got it, but otherwise it’s not required and, anyway, I very rarely use the LCD as I much prefer the EVF and I never CHIMP. Okay these items aren’t unduly heavy or bulky but do I need to pack them?, nine times out of ten or more I most certainly don’t. For my photographic interest all I typically need is a small, lightweight camera, a few small, lightweight lenses, a spare battery and memory card that’s about it. Basically all I’m doing, albeit somewhat late in the day, is applying my long-standing logic regarding camera and lenses to everything else in my bag. Once one let’s go of the notion that one “simply must” carry these things around, “just in case” then it becomes quite liberating.

Kind regards,

Leigh

“Once upon a time in Brugge”

Hi everyone,

“Once upon a time in Brugge”. Another of my Brugge landscapes. We’ve had a very stressful day. My antidote is to chill with a nice beer, listen to some music and work on one of my forgotten shots of Brugge.

Exciting lens hood and lens cap video :)

Hi folks,

Well one’s got to do something to pass the time in lockdown. πŸ™‚

Stay safe, kind regards,

Leigh

PS. I did a quick ready-reckon and for genuine Olympus lens hoods to fit five of my M.Zuiko lenses it came to just short of Β£190 whereas their cheaper equivalents came to less than Β£80 so a huge saving. I can and have bought a lens with that saving!.

Photography of the Year Youtube livestream.

Hi folks,

The Photography of the year announcement will be live on Jimmy Cheng’s YouTube channel on this link onΒ Wednesday 10th Feb at 10PM UK time. It’s at that time because the judge, is the famous American award-winning photographer Jay Dickman. Fingers crossed but the competition is pretty fierce, some excellent category winners, but it’s fun and I’m in with a chance πŸ™‚

All the best,

Leigh

Twins :)

Hi folks,

My two Lumix 12-32mm lenses mounted on my PEN-F and E-M5 mk II. I still haven’t managed to fully test the new one but I’ve done some testing and it seems just as sharp as my older one. I went out earlier to get a few test shots to a local common type area which was very heavily waterlogged after all the rain we’ve had of late, slipped with the camera in my hand and got myself and my gear thoroughly covered in very slimy mud but shot nothing of interest. πŸ™‚ On my return I wiped it down first to get the worst of the mud off, removed the lens, fitted a weather-sealed one and thoroughly washed the camera (the E-M5 II) down, dried it, and after gently cleaning the lens, refitted it, as good as new, you got to love Olympus’ weather sealing when you need it!. πŸ™‚ I always buy lens hoods for all my lenses, I think that they’re an essential accessory, these ones, by JJC, have the benefit of having a 58mm filter thread on the front and thus accepting an easier to attach filter like my variable ND filter and lens cap which, as they’re screw-on lens hoods is a very useful feature as you don’t have to remove them to fit a filter, a neat design feature I think.

I did a couple of test shots indoors of some ornaments, I love art deco πŸ™‚ , and our music room AKA dinning room, “Eat to the beat” πŸ™‚ , she loves Elvis, I tease her that there’s always been three in our relationship. πŸ™‚

And, as they used to say in Blue Peter TV program when I was a kid, “here’s one I made earlier” in pre-lockdown Bognor Regis, shot at f/5.6 ISO 200 as a five-frame handheld HDR, which I think that you’ve seen before which does nicely illustrate how sharp these lenses are.
