When in Rome #58 “The one that nearly got away”

Hi folks,

I found this work that I did which I thought that I’d lost of the very impressive Biblioteca Centrale Giuridica/Procura Generale della Repubblica (legal library and law courts) situated on the Piazza Cavour. I recently upgraded my DXO Viewpoint software from v2 to v3, love the auto perspective correction in the new version which works extremely well and reduces the workload somewhat.

Getting this off my chest :)

Hi everyone,

I post my artwork to a couple of sites that require you to habitually write text accompanying the post. As regulars to my blog and Facebook will know I don’t tend to write much unless I feel that there’s something that I want to include such as experimenting with a new technique or maybe an interesting location or occasionally a particular message or motivation to the work etc… I find it very annoying and tedious being regimented in to having to write something purely to hit a word count. I could write a load of pretentious rubbish every time just for the sake of it or I can do as I wish, write as little or as much as I want and present the work for the reader to view and hopefully to enjoy.

That’s better!, glad I got it off my chest! πŸ™‚

Kind regards

Boats, house boats and boat houses

Hi everyone,

River scene at Twickenham, I’ve been sitting on this work for a couple of days trying to decide if I like it or not. Most probably another work for a virtual dentist’s waiting room. πŸ™‚

Lupins?

Hi everyone,

Another painterly floral work ,not sure what they are, they look like some sort of Lupin but I’m not that sure about a lot of flowers and I’m happy to stand corrected. πŸ™‚

PS. Now the subject of my latest collaboration with the poet and writer Yvonne White of “Quotes from the dark” :

β€˜Velvet Fairies’

Soft blushes of color
flood through the fields
changing with the wind
as broken hearts they heal
With every whisper
between fluttering petals
a whole new world of delights
shifts and settles
Soaking up the light
bathing the land in sweet scents
we are reminded of the beauty
as velvet fairies shimmer in decent

Before and after processing

Hi everyone,

As a follow up to my last post I thought I’d post a before and after processing shot of York House. If one is prepared to spend some time in processing one’s images then there’s a lot that one can do. The detail was all there in the original shot it just need bringing out with some time and effort. I used a graduated neutral density filter on the sky to further bring out the sky. I also adjusted the shadow detail a bit.

DXO Optics Pro pre-processed and then adjusted to taste using various Topaz and NIK software plugins in Lightroom.

Why bother processing?

Hi folks,

I spend a lot of time processing my shots before I start working with them. My personal favourite RAW importer/processing software is DXO Optics Pro 11 Elite. There’s so much that one can do with a shot to bring out hidden details, sharpness, lighting, reduce high ISO noise etc. with this software and it has the best built in lens and camera body correction profiles of any software I’ve ever used. A few examples, I’ve used my same preset and I’d reduce the colour saturation to taste later in post processing. Original image and then my DXO processed image. I guess that a lot of folks don’t realise that the detail is captured in their images but not necessarily visible in their straight out of camera shots.

PS. I’ve not made any attempt to correct verticals in these shots which one can do with another DXO product called Viewpoint which I use as a plugin in Optics Pro. Nor have I tweaked them further individually. I’ve used the same preset for comparison purposes. These aren’t finished shots but rather a starting point for further processing until I’m happy with the end results.
