The big “C”

Hi everyone,

I have chosen to share some news with you all. The doctors have told me that there’s a near certainty that I have Stage 4 lung cancer. They still have a couple of tests to do but I feel pretty certain that their diagnosis is right. Unfortunately stage 4 cannot be cured but it can be treated to prolong life so, given the best case scenario, you might hopefully be stuck with me for some time to come πŸ™‚ however my ability to get out and take photos has for some time now been getting increasingly harder.

I’m not wishing to be sensationalist, melodramatic or seeking sympathy. I’ve been running this blog for more than 13 years and, in that time, I’ve made many good friends and I feel like I want to let my friends know where I’m at. My blog has always been much more than just about sharing my photographs, experiences, travels, techniques and gear etc. and one of the most enjoyable and rewarding things has always been meeting, conversing and sharing information with you all.

As you can imagine this has come as a huge shock to me, my family and friends and I’m determined to take whatever treatment options that I’m offered and fight this thing with all my strength of body and mind. Without bursting into my rendition of Frank Sinatra’s “My Way” which, trust me, you really DON’T want to hear πŸ™‚ , I’ve been truly blessed with a loving wife and family and good friends, a great many very happy memories, some fabulous travel opportunities, been fortunate to be able to indulge my passions for photography and music, what more could I have possibly wished for?!.

Warmest Regards to you all,

Leigh

  1. I am very sorry to hear this and I know what it’s like because my sister went through this starting in 2022 she lived for 18 months and did not want further chemotherapy because the side effects were very severe but during the time she lived she was able to visit her daughter who was expecting their second child and also to visit them over the Christmas and then she saw her new granddaughter when she was one month old she also went on some nice holidays and visits with her sons. I persuaded her to make one room in a house into a little studio where she could have an art materials so that she could spend some time drawing and painting without feeling she was obsessing the rest of the house
She also had a piano which she loved to play
I think the worst moment is the diagnosis and the shock. I hope you will get enough support and be able to develop gradually some peace of mind

    • Hi Katherine, thank you for your message very sorry to hear about your sister. Your sister’s story is inspirational, I guess it’s a case of maximising ones time and doing whatever can and wants to do. I’m not looking forward to treatment or, should I say, I am and I’m not in as I know it’s both unpleasant and most necessary. Yes, the shock is immense but, given time I think that we’ll gradually come more to terms with things. Best wishes, Leigh
