Another West Dean Gardens shot and U-GREEN SD Card reader/USB Hub.

Hi everyone,

Firstly another shot from my recent visit to West Dean Gardens. Olympus E-PL8 camera, M.Zuiko 14-150mm lens and Tifffen combined Black Pro Mist 1/4 and CPL filter.

A while back I purchased a small, inexpensive 4in1 U-Green USB 3 card reader hub which I’ve been using on the computer. The device has two USB 3 (blue) type A ports, slots for micro and full size SD cards and the hard wired cable terminates in a USB type A connector with an attached adapter to USB type C. I decided to buy another one to go in my travelling kit. I’m using an app. called USB Media Explorer on my Android phone and, with the hub attached along with an SD card and USB flash drive inserted it copies RAW files from the card to the drive very quickly. I have a dedicated device for this in my RAVPOWER file hub/travel router/USB power bank but this is a nice compact alternative/backup card backup solution. I like U-Green products, I have one of their Ethernet Switches attached to my network router which works very well.

Kind regards to all,

Leigh

  1. Hi Leigh,

first of all, that tree shot, really nice !

I also read about your setup using the U-Green hub together with USB Media Explorer on Android, and I like how clean and practical that approach is.

I’ve been experimenting with a similar idea myself, backing up cards in the field without a laptop, though in my case using a card reader that also doubles as a card holder, so a slightly different take on the same concept.

It’s interesting how many ways there are to solve the same problem.

    All the best, Marc.

    • Hi Mark great to hear from you my friend,

Thanks, it’s a beautiful location and one that I’ve been keen to visit for some time. My Wife’s recovering from the first of two cataract ops. so her eye is still quite sensitive to bright light. I’ve got to have mine done further down the line.

Yes, it is interesting to see how others sole the same problem. You know my dislike for carrying bulky gear so a laptop is out of the equation. The RAVPOWER file hub I have works well but it is considerably bigger and somewhat bulkier due to having a built in USB power bank. I’d still pack this in my camera bag when travelling away from home for an extended period of time becuse of it’s power bank facility but the U-Green setup works very well and I was surprised by how fast it transfers file from the card to the flash drive so for a shorter trip this is a better and lighter option to take with me.

      Take care, all the best,

      Leigh

      • Hi Leigh, good to hear from you, and I hope your wife recovers quickly from the surgery, those first days with light sensitivity can be quite uncomfortable. And when it’s your turn further down the line, I hope it all goes just as smoothly and resolves things properly.

That battery-powered hub is an interesting angle as well, especially for longer trips where having that extra power buffer makes a real difference. It’s always a bit of a balancing act between size, weight and flexibility.

I’ve been experimenting a bit recently with my brother as well, we ran into an issue on his Samsung phone where a Samsung SSD simply pulled too much power and wouldn’t behave properly. Interestingly, the same setup worked without any issue on my Xiaomi, which shows how different phones and configurations can introduce their own quirks. Same idea, different results depending on the device.

Always interesting to compare notes on this kind of setup.

        Have a great day !
        Marc.

      • Hi Marc,

Thanks, the operation has made a big different to the sight in her eye,. She’s now waiting for the all clear from the optician before having the other one done but she knows what to expect second time round. My cataract aren’t as bad, I will have to have them done at some stage.

The RAVPOWER device is nice because it’s powered and it’s just case of switching it on, inseting the card and drive and pushing a button, they also do an app. to got with it. The power bank side isn’t that powerful 6700 mAh from memory but handy to have. It’s still a very pocketable solution especially as your friend had the power issue. I have a Motorola phone and it powers the U-Green with the card and a 256GB flash care inserted.

You too, have a great day, we’re off to have a coffee and take some pictures in Arundel on the river Arun. One of my favourite locations.

        All the best,

        Leigh

      • Hi Leigh,

That sounds like good progress, and at least the second round will come with fewer surprises, which always helps. Hopefully everything goes smoothly for both of you.

Enjoy your day out together, and I hope the weather plays along. My wife has visited that region a few times and was just telling me Arundel has a beautiful castle, so you picked a good spot.

        Have a great day,
        Marc
